Fun in the Sun in Port Alfred (with a quick visit to Bathurst)

I had a lovely family holiday in Port Alfred.

The beaches were very beautiful. The main beach, is Kelly’s Beach, which is a Blue Flag beach. It is very clean and well kept. Every morning, we got to the beach at about 09h30 and the cleaning crew were just leaving after an extensive clean up. What impressed me most was, on New Year’s Day, the cleaning crew got there extra early and when I went down to the beach at about 08h30 the beach and its surrounding area had already been cleaned up! There are lifeguards on the beach and my children loved the shell collecting as well as the swimming and boogie boarding.

The marina is lovely with magnificent houses along the banks and everywhere you look. Just looking at them makes one dream. The Kowie River runs through Port Alfred. We took a cruise around the marina and up the river. It was very enjoyable and I would definitely recommend it.

There is a restaurant with a pub at the entrance to the Marina. It is a lovely viewing spot and definitely worth a visit. We watched the NSRI doing a few practise runs, going out through the breakers and into the sea. It was lovely to watch.

Another restaurant worth visiting is the Ocean Basket which is in Van Der Riet Street, on the banks of the Kowie River. We sat eating seafood, sipping wine and watching the boats and ski boats go past. What a lovely way to spend a lazy afternoon.

Close to Port Alfred is Bathurst. It’s only about a 15km drive. We went there one afternoon. We visited the “Big Pineapple” and the town centre. Bathurst is a very old town. It is also a big pineapple farming area and at the “Big Pineapple” there is a huge pineapple which you can go inside and there are displays. You walk up inside the pineapple and can learn all about pineapples and how they are grown all the way through to when they are canned and sent to the shops. At the top, you can go outside onto a view deck and there is a magnificent view of Port Alfred in the distance. It was a fun outing for my children. We then made our way into “town” where there are a few shops and the famous “Pig and Whistle” pub. This is the oldest licensed pub in South Africa. It was a nice relaxing afternoon’s outing.

I loved Port Alfred and found it to be a lovely place for a relaxing, sun and fun filled holiday. I can highly recommend it and I will definitely go back again.
